  • seaweed-farming-methods

Totally all species of seaweeds can be worked through similar farming methods. The first critical job is to take the correct method to well cover the limits from seaweed growing environment and seafarm nature condition.

For nori (Pyropia yezoensis), three farming methods are taken in China now as below.

    1) Racks Style [支柱式]. Jiangsu Province alongside the Yellowsea have large area of intertidal zones where much suitable for racks setting. Temperature of sea water there in winter is ideal (-3°C~0°C) for fast-growing nori. Based on tidal phenomenon over the intertidal zones, when wave's rising - nets (hung with nori) under the water, proper flow velocity will wash the nori and take foreign bodies away; when wave's falling - nets over the water, adequate sunshine may kill those parasitic species of seaweeds but nori still survive.

    2) Semi Floating Raft [半浮き流し式]. Working principle is actually same as racks method. They're set farther away from beach. When the tidal range comes to 7~8m, that should be semi floating raft rather than racks taken.

    3) Full Floating Raft [全浮き流し式]. This method can be well applicated for deeper sea areas (depth>15m). Unlike above methods, the nets won't be over the water periodically thru tidal - farmers need to overturn the raft manually when necessary. Shandong Province (on the north of Jiangsu) started farming nori in 2015 by full floating raft and today has occupied a position of nori source in the market.
